This course is open to individuals currently in a management or leadership role, those responsible for mentoring individuals or teams, or aspiring leaders seeking to develop their leadership capabilities.

What you'll study
This course focuses on developing coaching and mentoring skills for individuals, teams, and organisations. Participants will explore the value of coaching, understand different approaches, and learn how to foster a coaching culture. Emphasis is placed on building confidence and capability to coach and mentor effectively as a manager or leader.

Day 1:
Focuses on laying the foundations. You will reflect on the differences between coaching, mentoring, and counselling. You will explore coaching as a leadership style and important considerations for leaders as coaches, such as confidentiality and boundary management. You’ll then spend time understanding approaches to coaching, developing foundational coaching skills, and putting these skills into practice.
Day 2:
On day two, you will explore the role of mentoring in organisations and the principles of effective mentoring relationships and programmes. You will also learn about the importance of reflective practice in coaching and mentoring, including how to apply reflective practice in your coaching and mentoring interactions, and how to reflect on your own practice. Finally, you will have the opportunity to put this learning into practice.
Day 3:
During day three, you will learn how to create a coaching culture within your organisation to enhance engagement and performance. In the afternoon, you will explore how leaders and managers can use coaching and mentoring to support individuals and teams during times of change and uncertainty.
Day 4:
Day four focuses on coaching in context. You will examine a specific coaching context and develop your ability to adapt your coaching approach accordingly. In the afternoon, you will explore the principles of team coaching.
How you're taught
As this is a 20-credit Post Graduate Level 7 course you will complete an assignment. Once successfully completed, the 20-credits at Level 7 can be used to build towards our Postgraduate Certificate in Leadership and Management Practice.

Your Facilitator
This course is delivered by: Suzanne Ross - Senior Lecturer
Suzanne is part of the Executive Education team in the Business School. Her role comprises academic leadership, teaching, research, and consultancy. Suzanne is the Programme Leader for the ECCO in company Post Graduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma in Global Business and Module Leader for the Managing and Leading People in Organizations Module. She is also Module Leader for the Leading People and Organizations Module on the Executive MBA.

Suzanne is a lead consultant on in-company Organizational Consultancy and Leadership
Development Projects working across Public, Private and Third Sectors. She is also a facilitator and Business Coach for the NBS SME provision, facilitating on the government funded Help to Grow Management programme and previously the NBS Upscaler programme for SME’s growing their business.
A qualified Executive Coach, Suzanne is a member of both the International Coaching Federation and the European Mentoring and Coaching Council. She is accredited in a range of psychometrics for use in talent management and leadership development including, Hogan (Personality, Motivation and Values and Development Survey), MBTI, EQ-I, ESCI and the BPS Test User Ability and Test User Personality. She is a member of the Working with Resilience Global Consortium.
Suzanne’s PhD research (2018) was in leadership talent, success, and derailment. The focus of the research was on understanding the attributes of talented and successful leaders, how leaders enact their talent into success and why some leaders derail. She is a supervisor for MSc and MBA dissertations in the areas of leadership, women in leadership, talent management and organisational behaviour.
Suzanne’s research interests are: Leadership resilience, resilience in entrepreneurship, leadership behaviours, emotional intelligence, the ‘dark side’ of leadership, leadership derailment.
Suzanne is responsible for the HR Forum, a platform to engage HR professional with latest thinking in the HR field. She is a previous member of the Executive Education Advisory Board. She also provides expert commentary for the Press.
